Post-Op Care for Dental Implants

The dentist suggests immediate care post the dental implant operation. This blog will focus on the care every person who has undertaken a Dental Implant operation should take.

  • Bleeding

After implant surgery, you might encounter minimal bleeding. However, if you want to stop bleeding, you can use a damp gauge over the extraction site. Bite it for about 30 to 60 minutes with pressure and rest quietly by keeping your head elevated. It may also continue for hours. Use a gauge for more than 30 minutes if the bleeding continues. You will see pink or blood-colored saliva for 2 to 3 days after the procedure. And, that is relatively normal.

  • Swelling

Like bleeding, swelling is considered normal as it indicates the body’s healing process after the surgery. You will see a slight swelling around the cheeks after 24 hours of surgery and will remain for almost 2 to 3 days. During this period, it is advisable to use ice packs for 20 minutes to minimize swelling. After 48 hours, start using a warm or moist compress to the cheek.

  • Medication for Pain

Several oral surgeries are associated with specific discomfort post-treatment. If you are non-allergic to anti-inflammatory medicines, it is advisable to take them before the effect of local anesthesia wears off. For more severe pain, you can also use narcotic pain medication. Since this medication will make you drowsy, it is suggested to avoid driving or operating mechanical machinery. Your dentist might also prescribe you a specific anti-bacterial mouth rinse to use twice for the first two weeks. Always remember that these medications should not exceed the recommended dosage.

  • Diet

You will be recommended to consume liquids until the local anesthesia is still in effect. You can consume solid foods after the numbness wears off, though avoid chewing from the surgical area. However, ensure that the liquid or food you will consume is not so hot. You can have items like applesauce, puddings, or jello.

  • Oral Hygiene

A clean mouth prevents infection and makes the healing process quicker. After the surgery, clean your mouth after every meal. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush or fluoride toothpaste after meals and at bedtime. Also, avoid using mouthwash to rinse your mouth on the day post-surgery.

Moreover, you should avoid indulging in any kind of physical activity for 48 hours. You might also notice bad breath. It will disappear as healing occurs. Ensure to call the office if you feel any complications in the surgical site.
